The simplest answer is: if this is your first trip, aim for November to February, especially January. This is the heart of the high season, the dry season across much of the country, and an excellent time to visit Bangkok, take local trips from your hotel, and enjoy the beaches and islands.

Thailand is a year-round destination, but the month you travel can greatly change the character of your trip. Bangkok in January feels different from Phuket in August, and both differ from Chiang Mai in November. The weather also varies across the country. Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi are on the Andaman Sea, while Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are in the Gulf of Thailand. Bangkok and central Thailand have their own seasonal rhythm, as does the north around Chiang Mai, and the rainy season does not mean the same thing in every region.

This guide will help you choose the best month, match a region to your travel dates and plan your trip without wasting time on unnecessary transfers. You can also use it as a starting point for a conversation with us: share your dates, hotel and group size, and we will plan tours around Thailand with local support from the AsiaTrip team, hotel pickup and a tailored quote via WhatsApp.

When is the best time to visit Thailand? The short answer

November, December, January and February are usually the best months for a classic trip to Thailand. Sightseeing in Bangkok and central Thailand is most comfortable then, and the weather is more stable on many popular routes. It is still warm, but the heat can feel less tiring than in March, April and May.

January is one of the best months for Polish travellers. It is winter in Poland and peak season in Thailand, with conditions well suited to combining a city stay, nature, day trips and time on the islands. It is a good time to visit Bangkok, the floating market, the railway market, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi.

High season has a downside: more visitors, fuller hotels and greater demand for experienced guides. If you are travelling in January, do not leave everything until the last minute. It is best to arrange your accommodation base and main trips in advance, then decide on the rest once you arrive.

When to visit Thailand, month by month

Here is a practical month-by-month guide from January to December. It is not a fixed weather forecast, but a realistic overview for travellers: what to expect, whether it is worth going and who each month suits best.

Month

Weather and conditions

Crowds

Best for

January

One of the best months. These months offer the best balance of weather, sightseeing opportunities and comfort. December is also very good, but the end of the month can be more expensive and busier to organise because of the holidays and New Year.

A good plan for a first trip is to spend a few days in Bangkok, take trips from the city, then head to the beach. This way, you do not spend your whole holiday on the beach and also see other sides of Thailand: temples, markets, street food, the river, local neighbourhoods and places off the main tourist trail. If you do not want to plan the transfers yourself, you can use Bangkok as a base and choose trips with hotel pickup. This is especially convenient for routes such as the railway market, floating market, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Pattaya or Bangkok at night.

Bangkok and central Thailand: when is best?

Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, the railway market, the floating market and Pattaya are best visited from November to February. It is still hot during this period, but it is usually easier to stay active throughout the day. That matters because sightseeing in Bangkok can be intense: temples, traffic, boats, walks, food, shopping centres and evening activities.

Bangkok gets very hot from March to May. Sightseeing is still possible, but it helps to plan more carefully: start early, take a break somewhere air-conditioned during the middle of the day, then head back out in the evening. For visitors who do not know the city, local support from the AsiaTrip team and a private itinerary can make the day much more comfortable. From May to October, rain becomes more frequent, but it does not have to ruin your plans in Bangkok. Many activities can be rearranged: visit temples in the morning, go to a shopping centre during a downpour, explore Chinatown in the evening, or visit a rooftop bar when the weather clears.

Andaman Islands: Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi

The Andaman coast, including Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, James Bond Island, the Similan Islands and the surrounding area, is usually at its best from November to April. This is the classic season for beautiful beaches, boat trips, snorkelling, island trips and photos in turquoise waters. January and February are particularly good for this region. The sea is often calmer, and boat trips are more likely to go ahead as planned.

From May to October, the Andaman coast carries greater weather risks. You can still visit, but keep in mind that waves, rain and weather warnings may affect boat trips. If you only have a few days and mainly dream of ideal weather on the water, the peak season is a better choice. If you are flexible, the rainy season can be quieter and less expensive.

The Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao follow a different seasonal pattern from Phuket and Krabi. This matters because many people group all the islands together, then are surprised when the weather on one side of Thailand differs from the other. The Gulf islands are often seen as a good option when your dates do not suit the Andaman coast. Koh Samui and the surrounding area can be appealing in months when the weather around Phuket is less stable. Still, check the specific dates when planning, as the Gulf also has wetter periods.

Northern Thailand: Chiang Mai and the surrounding area

Northern Thailand, especially Chiang Mai, is best visited from November to February. The weather is more pleasant, mornings are cooler, and conditions are better for visiting temples, mountains, viewpoints and local markets. Chiang Mai has a very different feel from Bangkok or the islands: calmer, greener, rich in culture and less focused on beaches. November is especially appealing after the rains and during festival season. In February, bear in mind that the crop-burning season can affect air quality in some years. Add Chiang Mai to your itinerary if you have more than a week.

Rainy season in Thailand: can you still go?

Yes, you can visit Thailand during the rainy season. It does not necessarily mean rain from morning to night throughout your holiday. Often, the day starts normally, with showers arriving in the afternoon or evening. Sea-based activities carry the greatest risk. If your dream is an island trip and a full day on a boat, the rainy season calls for greater flexibility.

The rainy season also has its advantages: fewer crowds, better hotel rates, less crowded popular sights, greener landscapes and fuller waterfalls. If you want to see Thailand at a quieter pace and do not need perfect beach photos every day, it can be a sensible choice. The key is not to make your route too rigid. Leave some room in your schedule, and do not plan a boat trip, a long transfer and weather-dependent activities every day.

When is Thailand cheaper, and when is it most expensive?

Thailand is usually most expensive and crowded during high season, from December to February, especially over the holidays, New Year and in January. The rainy season and shoulder months, such as May, June, September and October, are often quieter and less expensive. Consider what matters more to you: lower costs and fewer people, or a better chance of stable weather. Most first-time visitors choose the weather.

How many days do you need in Thailand?

5-6 days, a good option for Bangkok and the surrounding area: temples, Chinatown, Khao San Road, the railway market, floating market, Ayutthaya or Kanchanaburi. It is not worth adding distant islands.

7-9 days, the shortest sensible itinerary for Bangkok plus one other region: Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket, Krabi or Koh Samui.

10-14 days, the best length for a first full trip. Wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees when visiting temples. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
March-May (hot season): very light, breathable clothes, a reusable water bottle, electrolytes, a hat and high-SPF sunscreen.
May-October (rainy season): a lightweight rain jacket, a small umbrella, quick-drying clothes and a waterproof phone case.
Islands and boat trips: swimwear, flip-flops, a quick-drying towel, sunscreen, a small waterproof bag and, if you like, a UV-protective shirt.

Practical tips before your trip

Visa and documents. Polish tourists can travel visa-free for tourist visits, but it is always worth checking the entry rules before flying, as regulations can change. Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), an electronic arrival card, has also been in use since 2025. It must be completed online before entry. It is best to do this well before your flight and keep the confirmation on your phone.

Currency. Thailand’s currency is the Thai baht. You can increasingly pay by card in tourist areas, but cash is still useful at markets, in small restaurants and on local transport. It is best to have a card and some cash for the start of your trip. Airport transfers: Bangkok has two airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. The Airport Rail Link runs from Suvarnabhumi, while a private transfer may be more convenient for families and travellers with large suitcases. Do not plan an ambitious trip right after a long flight. It is better to rest and start a full itinerary the next day.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Thailand for the first time?

For your first trip, the safest choices are January, February or November. Much of the country is in its dry season then, making these months the best balance of weather, sightseeing comfort and the chance to combine Bangkok with the islands.

Is Thailand worth visiting during the rainy season?

Yes. Rain rarely lasts all day, and in return you get lower prices and fewer crowds. You do need to stay flexible, especially with sea-based activities, and leave room in your itinerary for changes in the weather.

How many days do you need in Thailand?

A sensible minimum is 5-6 days for Bangkok and its surroundings alone. A more complete trip starts at 7-10 days, while 10-14 days is best for a comfortable combination of the city, islands, and time to relax.

When is it cheapest to visit Thailand?

It is usually cheapest and quietest during the rainy season and the shoulder months (May, June, September, and October). Prices are highest during peak season, from December to February, especially around the holidays and New Year.

Do I need a visa for Thailand?

Polish tourists can enter visa-free for tourism, but it is worth checking the rules shortly before departure. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. Since 2025, travellers have also been required to complete the electronic TDAC arrival card online before entering the country.

Plan your tours for the right time, with local support from the AsiaTrip team

You now know when to visit Thailand and how to choose a region for the month of your trip.
